My first impression
A venue that is quintessential Muskoka.
The first time I DJ'd at Port Cunnington Lodge was in 2018. I was immediately struck by the natural beauty of the massive trees surrounding the drive down toward Lake of Bays.
That approach does something important: it creates a sense of arrival. The road, the trees and the glimpses of water gradually pull you out of everyday life and into the wedding weekend.
Then Lake of Bays appears in front of you.

The water always looks inviting.
Port Cunnington Lodge sits right on Lake of Bays, with the shoreline woven into the experience rather than simply sitting somewhere in the background.
The ceremony gazebo
Even completely empty, it is stunning.
The ceremony gazebo at Port Cunnington Lodge frames the lake beautifully. With nothing more than a few floral arrangements and the water beyond it, the space already feels finished.
That is one of the things I appreciate about a venue like this: it does not need to fight for attention. The architecture, the shoreline and the surrounding landscape are already doing the work.
Then everyone arrives
Full, it becomes even more beautiful.
Put the people you love into that same space and the gazebo changes completely. The lake is still there. The view is still extraordinary. But now the setting is full of anticipation, emotion and the people who have travelled to celebrate with you.
It is beautiful empty. It is even better full of love.
A photographer's kind of venue
Point the camera almost anywhere.
Like many of my favourite Muskoka wedding venues, Port Cunnington Lodge is the sort of place where photographers can point their camera in almost any direction and find something worth photographing.
The lake, the old trees, the lawn, the cottages, the docks and the changing sky all create natural layers in the background. You do not have to leave the property to find a completely different look.
The Heritage Barn
And then you walk into this.
The waterfront gets most of the attention when you first arrive at Port Cunnington Lodge. Understandably so. But one of my favourite spaces on the property is tucked away from the lake.
The Heritage Barn is striking before you even step through the doors. Its black exterior, red roof and stone foundation give it a completely different character from the lodge and waterfront buildings around it.
Inside, the room opens dramatically. The high timber ceiling, exposed trusses and warm wood make the barn beautiful without needing much added to it.
And almost all of that floor is waiting for people to dance on it.
That is what I love about the space as a DJ. It feels intimate enough to keep everyone connected, but there is a genuinely substantial dance floor in the middle of the room. Tables, the bar and the DJ can live around the edges while the centre belongs to the party.
After a ceremony overlooking Lake of Bays and dinner at the lodge or under a tent, moving everyone into the Heritage Barn also creates a natural change in energy. You are not simply clearing tables and turning dinner into dancing.
You go somewhere else to start the party.
I think that matters. Everyone makes the move together, walks into a room that feels completely different from the rest of the day, and immediately understands what is supposed to happen next.

The barn gives the dance its own destination.
Ceremony by the lake. Dinner together. Then everyone walks into an entirely different space and the night changes with them.
