Muskoka Steamships: A Timeless Experience on the Muskoka Lakes

Weddings, corporate events and private celebrations aboard the Muskoka Steamships in Gravenhurst, Ontario.

My experience aboard Wenonah II

The moment you step aboard

There is something magical about stepping aboard a Muskoka Steamship.

I recently heard someone describe Muskoka as the most beautiful place in the world.

I couldn't disagree.

The scenery is extraordinary. The islands, the cottages, the rocky shorelines and the seemingly endless stretches of water. I've spent a great deal of time working at venues throughout Muskoka, and I still find myself amazed by just how beautiful this part of the world is.

But there's something particularly special about experiencing it from the water.

Aboard a Muskoka Steamship, the scenery isn't simply a backdrop to your event. It's constantly changing. Every turn reveals another stretch of shoreline, another beautiful cottage, another view that makes you stop and appreciate where you are.

And somehow, the experience feels timeless.

A sense of history

More than a century of Muskoka tradition.

One of the things that stands out most to me about the Muskoka Steamships is the sense of history.

People have been travelling these lakes aboard steamships for generations. There's a tradition of hospitality and celebration associated with these vessels that goes back more than a century.

And you can feel it.

From the moment you step aboard, there's a sense of occasion. The anticipation of departure, the movement of the ship, the scenery passing by.

The experience feels wonderfully removed from everyday life.

You aren't simply arriving at another event venue.

You're embarking on something.

That tradition is older than Wenonah II herself. Launched in 2002, she carries the spirit of Muskoka’s steamship era into a modern vessel. RMS Segwun, a different ship in the fleet, dates to 1887.

A shared journey

And then the ship leaves the dock.

I think this is one of the most compelling things about holding an event aboard a ship.

At most venues, the scenery remains the same throughout the day. You might have a beautiful view of a lake or a spectacular sunset, but you're experiencing it from one location.

Aboard Wenonah II, the entire setting changes around you.

The landscape becomes part of the experience. Guests can take in the views, enjoy each other's company and celebrate while travelling through some of the most beautiful scenery Muskoka has to offer.

It's a remarkable way to bring people together.

And there's something wonderful about knowing that everyone is sharing the same journey.

From firsthand experience

I've had the pleasure of DJing aboard Wenonah II.

My relationship with the Muskoka Steamships goes back several years.

I've DJ'd aboard Wenonah II for Gravenhurst High School proms, as well as the UCA Ontario Annual Conference, where I was booked through Carol Priest Entertainment.

These were very different events, but both gave me the opportunity to experience the ship as a working event venue rather than simply as a passenger.

And I loved it.

One of the things I appreciate about DJing is how different environments influence the atmosphere of a celebration.

A ballroom, a heritage barn, a waterfront resort and a ship travelling through the Muskoka lakes each create an entirely different experience.

Wenonah II is particularly memorable because the journey itself is part of the event.

An afternoon I will always remember

Sometimes the perfect soundtrack finds you.

One of the things I love about DJing weddings is that there's a natural flow to the day. Most of us have been attending weddings since childhood. We've watched our parents and grandparents show us how these celebrations unfold. We understand the rituals, the traditions and the moments that bring everyone together.

Corporate events are different.

Particularly when they begin in the afternoon, there isn't necessarily a familiar script. No established sequence of events that everyone instinctively understands. Sometimes, as a DJ, that means having an entire musical world to explore without knowing exactly where the afternoon will take us.

And I love that.

Which brings me to one of my favourite memories aboard Wenonah II.

I was setting up for a corporate event when an elderly Jamaican gentleman approached me and asked whether I had any roots reggae in my collection.

Did I ever.

I don't know how this angel found himself aboard that steamship that day, but I'm incredibly grateful he did.

Because suddenly, I knew exactly where I wanted to go.

I spent the next couple of hours digging through some of my favourite crates of warm, summery roots reggae. The kind of music that feels as though it was made for sunshine, good company and an afternoon with nowhere else you need to be.

And outside the windows, Muskoka slowly drifted past.

The islands. The cottages. The water. One breathtaking view after another.

There wasn't a frown aboard that ship.

Sometimes the most memorable events aren't the ones where every moment has been planned in advance.

Sometimes all it takes is the right person asking for the right music at exactly the right time.

And I can't imagine a better place to have spent that afternoon.

Weddings, proms and corporate events

A setting for all kinds of celebrations.

Although much of my work throughout Muskoka involves weddings, I think the Steamships deserve consideration for a much broader range of events.

I've personally experienced the venue through school proms and a professional conference, and I can easily understand the appeal for corporate celebrations, private parties and weddings.

There's an immediate sense that the event is something special.

You don't need to manufacture an elaborate theme or transform an ordinary room into an interesting setting.

You're already aboard a beautiful vessel, surrounded by Muskoka.

The experience itself is the attraction.

The soundtrack

The venue creates the experience. The music becomes part of it.

As a DJ, I'm always interested in how music contributes to the atmosphere of an event.

Sometimes that means creating a soundtrack that complements the setting, allowing people to socialize and enjoy their surroundings.

Other times, it's about bringing everyone together on the dance floor.

What I love about a venue like Wenonah II is the opportunity to create those different experiences within the same celebration.

The scenery, the journey, the company and the music all contribute to something memorable.

And when it's time to dance, there's something particularly special about doing it aboard a ship.

My perspective

Would I recommend an event aboard Muskoka Steamships?

Absolutely.

There are plenty of beautiful places to host an event in Muskoka. I've been fortunate enough to work at many of them.

But there aren't many venues where the experience begins the moment you step aboard and continues to unfold as the landscape passes by.

The Muskoka Steamships offer something genuinely different.

A sense of history. A beautiful journey. An opportunity to celebrate surrounded by some of the most extraordinary scenery in Ontario.

An event aboard a Muskoka Steamship is a timeless experience.

And I'd love to DJ aboard again.
