Brooklands Farm
Six generations of Muskoka history and one extraordinary place to celebrate.
A working family farm. A beautifully preserved century-old barn. Gardens, fields, forest, a sailcloth tent and views that seem to change every time you turn around.
My first impression
This feels like a farm because it still is one.
There are beautiful barn wedding venues throughout Ontario. Brooklands Farm feels different to me because the farm is not simply scenery constructed around the wedding venue.
Six generations of the Riley family have worked this land since 1876. Today, Brooklands is still an active farm, growing produce on its rolling fields while the historic buildings and grounds welcome people here to celebrate.
I love that combination. There is history everywhere, but the property does not feel frozen in the past.
It feels lived in. Cared for. And very much alive.
Rooted in the land
One hundred and fifty years of farming changes the way a place feels.
Brooklands is not a wedding venue with a farm theme. It is a six-generation Muskoka farm that also happens to be a remarkable wedding venue.
The Riley family first settled here in 1876. The farm evolved from a homestead into a dairy operation and today includes market gardening, maple syrup production and forty acres of working farmland.
The current farm uses biological practices intended to build soil health from season to season — including cover cropping, crop diversity, natural fertility and integrated approaches to pest management.
I think that history matters to the experience of being here. The fields are not a backdrop. The barn is not a reproduction. The buildings and landscape belong together because they have been evolving together for generations.
Brooklands has been changing for 150 years without losing what makes it Brooklands.
That also makes it particularly beautiful for a wedding. There is something different to photograph in virtually every direction: weathered wood, open fields, gardens, enormous trees, water, changing skies and the farm itself.
It has the character people want from a rustic wedding venue, without ever feeling manufactured.
The ceremony
It does not take much to make this beautiful.
One of the things I appreciate about outdoor ceremonies at Brooklands is that the setting never feels like it is trying too hard.
An arbour, some flowers, chairs and the people who matter most are really all you need. Beyond them are the fields, trees and Muskoka sky.
For me, ceremony audio should work exactly the same way. People should clearly hear the music and every word of the ceremony without noticing the equipment that makes that possible.
The landscape gets to be the backdrop.
The sailcloth tent
Even the rain plan feels like part of the venue.
The tent extends the celebration outside instead of making the outdoors something everyone has to escape from.
Brooklands uses its sailcloth tent for cocktail hour and as a weather backup for the ceremony. It is a practical part of the wedding plan, but standing out on the lawn under string lights, it also becomes part of the atmosphere.
This is one of those properties where being outside never feels like the space between the important parts of the wedding. Cocktail hour on the lawn, photographs around the farm and even simply walking between spaces all feel like part of the day.
The 1903 barn
Then there is the barn.
The Brooklands barn was raised in 1903. More than a century later, it remains the visual anchor of the property.
From outside, you see the weathered boards, green roof and enormous BROOKLANDS lettering across the front. It looks exactly like the building you hope will be waiting for you when someone says you are going to a wedding on an old Muskoka farm.
What I love is that the restoration has not polished away its character.
It still looks and feels like an old barn.
Inside the barn
The room gets even better after the sun goes down.
Inside, all of that history becomes part of the reception. Massive timber beams cross the ceiling. String lights wrap the room in warm light. Long harvest tables feel completely at home against the old wood.
During dinner it is intimate and warm.
Then dinner ends, chairs move, the music changes and the same room becomes a party.
That transformation is one of my favourite things about Brooklands.
There is no sterile ballroom to make disappear with décor. The room already has personality. As a DJ, my job is not to compete with that atmosphere.
It is to build on it.
The whole farm
For the day, Brooklands feels like your place.
Brooklands hosts one wedding each weekend, so the celebration never feels like one event being moved through a wedding factory.
Couples and their wedding party can start the day in the heritage log cabin. There are locations around the property for a first look and photographs, an outdoor ceremony, cocktails on the lawn or under the tent, and dinner and dancing in the barn.
Instead of squeezing every part of the wedding into one room, the day moves around the property.
That movement gives the celebration a natural rhythm. Every transition brings a slightly different view, atmosphere and energy.
It feels less like attending an event and more like spending an extraordinary day on the farm.
My favourite Brooklands memory
And then there is the end of the night.
One of my favourite videos I have ever taken at a wedding was shot at Brooklands after the last song.
The dance is finished. Everyone is sweaty and happy. The lights are still glowing inside the old barn. Instead of simply disappearing, people spill outside together and the celebration follows them.
I pinned this video to my Instagram because, to me, it perfectly captures what a great wedding feels like when everything has worked.
Nobody wants the night to be over.
